Farnley. - Solicits Milnes's vote for his brother Richard, who wishes to become Registrar of Deeds for the West Riding of Yorkshire; includes printed circular from Richard Fawkes in support of his candidacy, dated 10 Apr. 1863, Farnley Hall, Otley.
Written on board H.M.S. Tartarus, off Tarbert, cove of Cork, addressed to Mary Lake at 144 Pread [Praed] Street, Paddington, London. - Received her letter with the money order; thinks she had better go to Woolich [Woolwich] and ask Mr Robinson to direct her to Mr [?] Vening. He is well and hopes she is too; they are just waiting for another ship to come then they are going to Cork.
Charles Stevens named as secretary of Provident Life. With attached sheet carrying numerous other small advertisements for Debenham & Freebody's; Cramer's pianos; Symington's etc.
Queen's Road, Nottingham. - Wishes to progress beyond present rank of Supervisor in the Inland Revenue; struggling to support wife and seven children; has hopes for his eldest son Charles Edward but needs financial assistance until it is secured; agrees with Milnes's remarks in The Times on convict discipline; wishes he had leisure to indulge literary pursuits.

Fryston. - Addresses her brother as 'Dearest Ricky'. Only heard the news this afternoon when she came to Fryston; their father was waiting in the hall to tell her. Aunt Louisa says he 'shed tears of joy' when he heard the news. When the baby's health was drunk 'they all wish'd he might be as good a man & as much respected all over Yorkshire as his Grandfather is... & "his father is a worthy gentleman" they added'. Anxious to hear how Annabel is; they were disappointed not to have a line saying she was doing well.
