Condolences on the death of Joseph Bickersteth Mayor
Charlotte La Trobe summarily dismissed from her position in Paris
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, and printed material which document the life and work of playwright Sir Peter Levin Shaffer.
Sans titreThe Works are listed in order of first production, or date of writing if not produced, with all associated correspondence, writings, printed material gathered under the title. The correspondence in this series has been listed, if not fully catalogued, and is arranged in date order. Materials are still being catalogued, and will be added when this complete.
Gathered here are notebooks with scene fragments or notes from three or more different plays in each notebook, as well as a group of unidentified, miscellaneous draft pages from unidentified works.
A typed transcript of 27 audiotapes of an oral history interview, with gaps indicating where the recording was inaudible, and a few emendations in an unidentified hand. The interviews are wide-ranging and cover his personal and professional life in a non-linear way, touching on the same topics several different times. Transcript from p. 197 to the end was previously stored in a folder labelled 'PLS. (Peter's copy) (of Philippa's transcript).'
Printed caption under image: 'From a Photograph by Mrs F. W. H. Myers. Photogravure by Annan & Sons, Glasgow'. 'Frederic W. H. Myers' written beneath this by hand.
'Dickinson Bros Photos. 107 Kings Road, Brighton, 14 New Bond St London' printed on mount below image. 'F. W. H. Myers' written in Eveleen Myers' hand below this. 'Sent to Eveleen with poem 1880?' written in pencil on back.
These items comprise:
(1) a book of hymn-tunes;
(2–6) the scores of four unpublished fantasias for organ in B minor (No. 2), D minor (No. 4) (two copies), F major (No. 5?), and F sharp minor (No. 7);
(7–9) the scores of three fantasias for organ in E minor, C minor (originally No. 3), and G major, published by Stainer & Bell Ltd as Three Fantasias for the Organ in 1939;
(10–12) the scores of four other organ pieces, formerly in a folder (13), with a related note (14)—apparently also sent to Stainer & Bell;
(15–16) the envelopes in which the papers arrived.
The scores appear to be in more than one hand. No attempt has been made to determine which, if any, are autograph. Perhaps one of the hands belongs to Maude Gray. Each of the published scores 7–9 is marked up for use as printer’s copy with the size of the paper (‘Royal’) on the front, the publication details at the foot of the first page, and numbers on the systems to indicate the intended lineation of the music. The copyright date marked on these manuscripts is 1938, but the printed versions have 1939.
Sans titreThis envelope is addressed to ‘Mrs. Alan Gray. | 10 Chaucer Road, | Cambridge.’ There are no marks of posting.
This envelope (initially sent to Maude Gray by the Oxford University Press on 6 No-vember 1936) is marked firstly, ‘3 Fantasia [sic] B minor, D minor & F | Played through by Mr Boris Ord in 1937 | Did not seem satisfactory | Fantasia in F♯ minor’, and secondly (on a sticky label) ‘Music by Allan [sic] Gray | Send [sic] to Dad by | Mrs M Gray’.
On one side is written: ‘No 1 Choral Prelude on “Rock of Ages” is not here. Was this possibly the one printed by you in 1925—Choral Preludes No 1. The first one is on Rock of Ages.’ (‘here’ apparently means ‘in the folder Add. MS a. 801/13). Below this is has been added ‘Yes | S & B’ in a different hand, presumably that of an employee of Stainer & Bell, and on the other side is ‘Choral Prelude Rock of Ages | published by S & B.’ in the first hand.
A folded sheet of music paper, marked on the front ‘1 Choral Prelude | on | “Rock of Ages” | 2 Meditation | 3 Prelude’. Cf. Add. MS a. 801/14.
The first piece is headed ‘Prelude’ and begins ‘[Alle]gro moderato’. At the end is written ‘A.G. | April /95’. The second piece is headed ‘II | At Evensong’ and begins ‘Andante tranquillo e sostenuto’. The third piece, which begins ‘Allegro vivace’ is headed only ‘III’ and appears to be incomplete. The numbering suggests that the pieces were intended to form a set. Only the first piece is dated, but the others were evidently written not long afterwards.
The title ‘Prelude’ is written at the head. The initial tempo is ‘Moderato maestoso’. At the end of the music is written ‘A.G. Mar 19/18’.
The title ‘Meditation’ is written at the head. The initial tempo is ‘Andante sostenuto’.
The title ‘Fantasia in E minor | for organ | Alan Gray’ is written on the front, with the word ‘Revised’ above.
The title ‘Fantasia in C minor No 3 | Alan Gray’ is written on the front (the number has been struck through). At the end of the music is written ‘A.G. | Ap 1909’. The title also occurs on p. 7, followed on p. 8 by an earlier version of the opening bars, both of which have been struck through.
The title ‘Fantasia in G | for Organ | Alan Gray | (1918 rev[ise]d 1924)’ is written on the front.
The title ‘Fantasia in F♯ minor | No 7’ is written at the head. The initial tempo is ‘Moderato’ (altered from ‘Allegro’). This score resembles Add. MS a. 801/3 and was probably written about the same date.
