Corrected draft: unidentified hand.
Waterloo Place. - Written in 3rd person. Declining invitation to republish One Tract More.
Whitehall. - Acknowledges One Tract More.
Ibbotson’s Hotel, Vere St. - Encloses response [no longer present] to Phillipps’ letter; April number of the Catholic Magazine will contain commentary on [J.H.] Newman'’s Tract Ninety.
Not a genuine letter: from an anti-Catholic quarter. Thanks for support in Parliament; 'you are jist the person who would shute us because you don’t care what you say - it is all alike to you -true or false -whichever sarves you best -and this is the doctrine we tache our flocks'; Lord John Russell is not to be relied on; he merely inflames the Protestants; Milnes can be granted “a safe Pasport to Heaven” whatever his actions.
No significance in the fact that priests do not teach in France as the Catholic faith is not strongly upheld there; successful education in Paraguay; personal Anglo-Catholic sympathies; disapproves of French example.
Trin[ity] Coll[ege, Cambridge]. - Will prepare petition but fears there is little support for the Maynooth Grant here; understands 'the strong Camdenites are all against the measure'.
3 Essex Court, Temple. - Requests House of Commons Order for a night when Peel is likely to resign.
Ackworth Rectory. - Supports grant but cannot petition here; planned meeting at Pontefract: “Messrs Stainforth & Co . are perfectly rabid”; believes grant will have good results; others only care about political ground to be gained.
Pontefract. - Opposes further grant; Government's attempt to regulate Catholic clergy will not succeed; salaries for priests would have to follow; supports political rights of Catholics but not financial support by the English:
Marine Villa - Strong objections at Knottingley to Maynooth Grant.
Pontefract. - Memorial by constituents threatening to withdraw support for Milnes over Maynooth Grant; Stainforth's own conscience compels him to oppose Milnes.
26 Pall Mall. - Reasons for voting in favour of the Maynooth Grant; duty as MP overrides personal considerations; importance of enlightened education for Catholics; differs from Dissenters regarding voluntary principle; believes his is the way to ease the Irish burden.
Navy Club. - Irish Catholic and Protestant clergy will always be at odds in matters of education; [reasons]; importance of education for improving conditions in Ireland.
Knottingley. - Milnes' letter in reply to address [ie. HOUG/E/F/2/3] demonstrated true support for the Church in Britain.
Pontefract. - Milnes' letter in reply to the Vicar [Richard Stainforth: ie. HOUG/E/F/2/3] is well received; Russell was explaining his change of tone, “but the Roman Catholic Priest came in & of course the conversation dropped”.
26 Pall Mall. - in reply to constituents’ address; supports Protestant Church in Ireland; importance of regulated maintenance for Roman Catholic clergy; precedents; no threat to character of Government which already supports Catholic Church in a number of ways; “Roman Catholic Priests...under the present voluntary system, owe their daily bread to political agitation”; Government regulation will avert danger to Protestant Church in Ireland.
Sending requested information on Irish clergy.
Pontefract. - Pained to communicate the accompanying [missing] address [i.e. from constituents doubtful about Milnes’ religious allegiance owing to his support for grants towards education of Irish Catholic clergy]:
Monkhill, Pontefract. - explains opposition to Milnes over Maynooth Grant despite regard for Milnes family.
