Biographical history

John Enoch Powell was born in 1912, the son of Albert Enoch Powell, a schoolmaster. Powell won a scholarship to King Edward's School in Birmingham and in 1930 entered Trinity College as an Entrance Scholar. In 1933 he graduated with a first class in classics and the next year was elected a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity, and studied the Greek historians Thucydides and Herodotus. In 1938 he became Professor of Greek at the University of Sydney. After serving in WWII, Powell turned his back on an academic career and entered politics, for which he is much better known.
