John Enoch Powell was born in 1912, the son of Albert Enoch Powell, a schoolmaster. Powell won a scholarship to King Edward's School in Birmingham and in 1930 entered Trinity College as an Entrance Scholar. In 1933 he graduated with a first class in classics and the next year was elected a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity, and studied the Greek historians Thucydides and Herodotus.
