A memorandum dated 5 Feb. 1798 accompanying the letter says that it was found by the writer on his staircase while an undergraduate 'with Cat's meat on it', and that it will be sent to Rev. Thomas Jones, Fellow, should anything happen to him. A note below dated 10 Nov. 1833, signed James Tate, identifies the writer as George Hutchinson (they were both students at Richmond School, and Tate was headmaster there).

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

According to an annotation, the letter was added to the Library's collections in Jan. 1921.
