      Note

This, and three of the other following letters by Colenso, are addressed to 'My dear Friend', but references to Brighton, a sister to be greeted, and the fact that there are no letters later than 1858, when Selina Macaulay died suggest that she is the recipient. 'Miss Macaulay' is mentioned as one of Colenso's correspondents in O.15/73/35.
