Scope and content
Thanks his mother for her letter. Is 'so sorry about Khartoum', and hopes 'General Gordon is not killed'. The [school] paper came out on Wednesday; [John Grosvenor?] Calverley, who is at Harrow, sent the double acrostic at the end. Doctor Harries died on the 3rd; the school all subscribed to get a wreath for the funeral. They 'play nothing but football now'. Has rained today so they have not been out or to church. Glad Charlie has 'got a copy for history' and hopes he will like German. Is wearing a pair of his new socks, which fit very well. Smith would like a photograph of Robert's father, if there is one he could have; Robert hopes his father is well. Notes in a postscript that he has got his photograph and 'singing certificate'.
