My dear Sir
Hoveringham
I have considered your question {1} as to “Cristinge” {2} with great interest. I have never met with that word before, but I conjecture that it is a miswriting (or reading) for “Crifting”. There is a tract of Inclosed Lands called the “Criftings”, adjoining the Dover Beck about 5 miles North of Hoveringham. I know no other instance however of that name, and do not know the derivation of the first syllable unless it is from the same root as “Croft”. “Crofting” I think would be the exact equivalent of “Little Close”.
I remain | my dear Sir
Yours most truly
