Transcript

Miss N has asked me t[o] write her a testimonial as t[o] her work i[n] Lati[n] whilst at th[e] University. Owing to recent changes i[n] th[e] classical staff here there is unfortunately nobody able t[o] speak from a knowledge of her work throughout her period of residence here {1}, but from all that I have see[n] of it she impresses me as a good worker, interested in her work & is making steady progress at it. Personally she is pleasant t[o] deal with & thoroughly reliable & I should expect her t[o] get on excellently both w[ith] he[r] pupils & he[r] colleages†

—————

This draft testimonial is written on a printed form headed with the name of the University of Reading, the partial year ‘192’, and the words ‘Memorandum from’ and ‘to’. A number of words were abbreviated or not distinctly completed. The missing letters have been supplied in square brackets.

{1} ‘Owing … here’ has been struck through in pencil, and the following words have been interlined: ‘I have see[n] her during th[e] present session only for th[e] two terms during which I have bee[n] in the University.’ (‘work only for th[e]’ has been deleted after ‘her’.)
