Born 28 May 1888 in Longsight, Manchester, Lancs., son of John Gerrard McCubbin. Educated at Manchester Grammar School. Matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1906 as a pensioner, received the Bell scholarship in 1907 and B.A. in 1909. Ordained to the curacy of Astley Bridge, Bolton, in 1911, became Lecturer and Curate of Bolton Parish Church in 1920, and Vicar of Kellington, Yorks. in 1923. He was appointed to Aysgarth in 1933, and in 1945 was appointed to the united benefice of Reepham and Hackford with Whitwell and Kerdiston. He died 2 July 1954.

In 1955 the Rev. George Hurst found this notebook when he took possession of the Rectory of Reepham and Hackford with Whitwell and Kerdiston, where it had been left by John Harold McCubbin, his predecessor.

Title on first leaf: "J. H. McCubbin, Trinity College, Cambridge. Compositions & translations 1908-9, A. W. Verrall, Litt. D., Director of Studies & Lecturer". Trinity student notebook comprised of pasted in printed pages of Trinity College Lecture Room Latin and Greek Compositions, with Latin or Greek on one side, and the translation on the other, with MS notes on both, some of them quoting A. W. Verrall on points of grammar and his praise or censure for the translations. Most of the compositions are dated between October 1908 and April 1909, with two earlier compositions, from 14 Oct. 1895 and 10 May 1905.
