Notes at end: 'Item to collect no more simple words - Reserve the rest of the volume for observations on Etymologies and for extracts from foreign authors serving to illustrate derivations.' 'Item. To note no more obvious etymologies especially German, of common words - such a collection will soon fill this volume with rubbish of which no use can be made and as such words occur continually in reading, it will be impossible to avoid frequent repetitions.'
