The sketch is captioned ‘’οι ’ένδεκα Σωκρατην λύουσι’, ‘The eleven are washing Socrates. E.V.’ (the reading and significance of the two letters at the end are uncertain), ‘but 3 have gone to get more water as Socrates is remarkably dirty’. One of the characters in the background on the left is identified as Xantippe, while two peering in at a door on the right are identified as Crito and Phaedo, ‘trying to spy out the fun’.
