Scope and content
The sketch is captioned ‘Illustrations of the Greek Drama. No II | πότερα δ’ἂν, εἰ νέμοι τις αἳρεσιν, λάβοις; | Soph. Aj. 265’. The man on the left, who is in rustic dress and appears to be holding a fishing-rod, is saying: ‘Thankee kindly 3 penn‘orth o‘ rum sir’; the man on the right, who is wearing an apron and smoking a long clay pipe, is probably the innkeeper. The sign of the inn is a rampant lion and the inscription over the door is ‘JOHN SMITH. LICENSED | BEER. ALE AND[?] SPIRITS’.
