Scope and content
Mathematical School, Eton - 'An annual prize of £30 worth of books is about to be founded by Mr Tomline member for Shrewsbury for the encouragement of the study of arithmetic and mathematics'. What subjects does WW recommend for the examination: 'The deep attention you have given to the whole subject of education, the result of which is the exposition of views and principles the soundness of which must be universally admitted persuade me that you will be disposed kindly to give the question your thoughtful consideration'. However, the standard at Eton 'must be low, for there is very little time given to mathematical reading'.
