Printed in the novel The History of Sir Charles Bentinck, Bart., and Louisa Cavendish (c. 1785), vol. i, pp. 151–2, under the title ‘To Miss Cavendish’. The writer of this novel, who is referred to on the title-page merely as ‘the author of Laura and Augustus’, was identified by Dale Spender in Mothers of the Novel (1986) as Eliza Bromley. In line 13 the manuscript has ‘F—l’ where the printed text has ‘fortune’, and in line 19 there are two asterisks where the printed text has the name ‘Harlow’.
