Beside the top figure, who is bearded and tidily dressed, is written: ‘This is Brown as he appeared before his famous ascent of Langdale Pikes one windy day in January—NB. Brown was remarkably proud of his beard.’ Beside the lower figure, who is clean-shaven and in rags, is written: ‘and this is the abject wretch who appeared some hours after at the Dungeon Ghyll Hotel “clean shaved & done for”’.
