Scope and content
Trinity College - WW has made arrangements to substantially lighten his load as head tutor [see WW to RJ, 21 Oct.1833]: 'This is excellent good in itself, but better still is this that it makes it a very easy and short affair to give up the tuition altogether if I find that my remaining official employments are burdensome'. He can now return 'forthwith and in earnest to my beloved induction. I have been employed all the term hitherto upon a thumping paper on the tides which I intend to be a step of some consequence in the theory. I wish I could explain to you how useful my philosophy is in shewing me how to set about a matter like this, and how good a subject this one of the tides is to exemplify it'.
