      Printed under the same title in The New Founding Hospital for Wit (1784 ed.), vol. v, pp. 32–3, where the verses are attributed to the same author as the ‘Verses sent by a Gentleman to his Lady, with a Present of a Knife’, which they follow (cf. pp. 64r–70r below). Reprinted in other miscellanies and in The Poetical Works of the Rev. Samuel Bishop, A.M. (1796), vol. ii, pp. 19–21. The verses purport to have been written ‘sixteen years’ (line 2) after the author’s marriage, except in the collected editions, where the period is given as ‘fourteen years’. Samuel and Mary Bishop were married on 1 January 1763.
