Stuk 4 - Accounts of the expenses of the French Revolution

1 volume (41 x 28 cm), containing 35 leaves and a loose sheet. The contents probably comprised at least three separate documents, comprising ff. 1–27, 28, 29–33 respectively, but the collation is uncertain. Half-bound.

According to a memorandum inserted in the front of this volume, the accounts in it were copied from various sources. The first (ff. 2r–26v) is evidently related to a MS which was sold with the library of the late Marquis Germain Garnier in 1822, extracts from which were printed the following year in Mémoires sur les journées de septembre 1792, pp. 305–23 (see the note on p. 139). The papers at one time belonged to M. G. T. Villenave, who added the title on f. 1r. Villenave’s collection contained various other French official documents, including those in Crewe MS 11. The contents of these two volumes, which are bound in similar style, were probably acquired by Monckton Milnes at the same time, some time between 1846, when Villenave died, and 1850, when the present volume was bound. The binder’s stamp, which is on the back of the front free endpaper, reads ‘White. Relieur. 24 Pall Mall. 1850.’ The armorial bookplate of Robert, Earl of Crewe, is pasted inside the volume, and his heraldic ‘garb’ is stamped on the front cover.

On the spine is stamped ‘Dépenses de la Révolution du 10 Août. M.S.’
