Scope and content

Writes to express her sympathy on the death of Henry Sidgwick. Supposes that Nora is feeling 'terribly lonely', but suggests that perhaps she is helped by the sympathy of so many of her old students. Claims to have felt privileged when at Cambridge to be able to attend Henry's lectures, and to be taught by him and helped in the arrangement of her studies. Remembers his 'bright and interesting conversation one morning' when she had breakfast with the Sidgwicks, and claims to have 'vivid recollections of his appreciative reading of some of [Newbolt's] poems one afternoon.' States that although he died at a comparatively early age, 'he had already done a great work'. Suggests that it is perhaps a comfort to Nora that he 'did not live to experience that decline in mental vigour which usually accompanies old age'.
