The collection consists of the manuscript collection of the third Baron Rothschild, much of which was purchased at auction. The majority of items are 18th-century literary works with a particular emphasis on Swift.

The manuscripts were catalogued within the Rothschild Library catalogue which is arranged in alphabetical order irrespective of whether items are books or manuscript. Each item was given a number within a running series. Therefore, the reference numbers of the manuscript item are not necessarily consecutive.
