On the guard to which this letter is attached J. W. Clark has written: ‘The original of this letter, unfortunately without date, was given by my Father to Mrs Busfeild of Upward House, nr. Guiseley, Yorks. I obtained the copy from her representatives, as the next two letters explain, in 1872.’
