Items 1–3 were probably collected by Moses Jackson, 4–19 by his son Gerald (see 20). The items in the first group were numbered by Gerald ‘1’, ‘3’, and ‘2’ respectively, while ten of those in the second (4, 6, 10, 11, 13–14, and 16–19) bear what appear to be his initials (‘GCAJ’). The cuttings and the accompanying letters were given by Gerald’s son Andrew to the Housman Society, who presented them in turn to Trinity in June 2022.

Housman Society

This small collection comprises a number of newspaper cuttings relating to A. E. Housman (1-22) and two letters exchanged between Gerald Jackson and Housman’s biographer, George L. Watson (23-4).

The items have been arranged in chronological order.

For simplicity’s sake sections of newspapers have been referred to in descriptions as ‘cuttings’ even when they extend to a whole leaf. The capitalisation and punctuation of newspaper headings have sometimes been adjusted.
