Text of first specimen begins 'An extensive contemplation of human affairs will lead to this conclusion that among the different conditions and ranks of men the balance of happiness is preserved in a great measure equal' [from The hive of modern literature: a collection of essays, narratives, allegories, and instructive compositions..., published 1799]. A second slip is a copy of this passage in a different hand; a third slip is the continuation of the first passage, 'In the lot of man, mutual compensations.... entirely miserable'.
