Archival history
This book was originally used as a ledger, and two accounts remain, containing entries dated between 1808 and 1822. One of these accounts (ff. 66v–67r) is headed ‘The Representatives of Mrs Mary Thompson (Mr Rearden)’ and includes a reference to lands at Carrigeenaveagh (sic). The epitome itself is dedicated (f. 1v) to William Webber Bagnell, curate of Honiton Clyst. The author was almost certainly Abraham Bagnell, author of the anti-Catholic pamphlets Antiquated Scrupulosity contrasted with Modern Liberality and Truths, not ‘Truth’ (both 1829). The armorial bookplate of Robert, Earl of Crewe, is pasted inside the volume and his heraldic ‘garb’ is stamped on the front cover.
