28 June 1936.
Dear Dr. McKerrow,
Herewith Act II of 3 Henry VI. You will notice that I have noted as I went along cases of misplaced apostrophes. Now that the problem is on my mind I seem to meet them everywhere and am beginning to wonder if they were as rife in the earlier plays and I didn’t notice them! So far as I can judge at present, it looks as if chaos reigned until the corrector of F3 came along and got most of them in their right place. I shouldn’t think they would worry anyone if they were left.
I am still bothered by the question mark problem. I can’t help thinking there must be some principle behind the frequent omission of the query, especially as the omission was often not rectified until the eighteenth century. I must look at some seventeenth century books on the subject next time I am in town.
I was hoping to finish Act III and to send it along with this today but havn’t managed it. I shall probably send it on tomorrow. It seems plain sailing in comparison with Act II—you will see I found the latter full of snags and difficulties.
