Transcript

2 Bankfield Lane, Southport.
10 July 1936.

Dear Dr. McKerrow,

I am sending Act V of 3 Henry VI. I don’t think there is anything I can do to it at present. Most of the slips (as in Act IV) concern alterations that still want making in speakers’ names etc.

Your parcel containing 2 Henry VI (collation notes, notes & slips) has just reached me. I will go through these this week-end and return the papers you want back early next week. You will see I am returning the cheque. Please don’t argue about it! It was a kind thought but I said you could pay me for going through the proofs (if you really want to) and that you were to take the preliminary looking through the notes &c. as something I have done quite gladly and without any thought of payment.

I’m sorry the maid didn’t turn up and that the domestic situation hasn’t eased, but I hope Norfolk will prove a rest and change. I was very glad to hear that you don’t (like most men) hate the idea of being uprooted from home! And if you do ever consider going to Denmark I can assure you that nothing dire will happen to you! The only drawback is that the inhabitants don’t understand Danish (at least the inhabitants of Jutland don’t). I have had more unintelligible conversations in Denmark than anywhere & German isn’t a bit of good (but I suspect this was because I was well off the beaten tourist track when I was there before)—but it is a pleasant country, good roads, excellent food and very restful and as there isn’t much to see you […]
