Dear Dr. McKerrow,
Thank you very much for your letter which reached me here today and for the accompanying proofs {1}. I’m sorry the Romeo & Juliet suggestion was no use—but thank you for refraining from telling me to go to the geese and learn wisdom!
I have gone through the proofs and your account of the treatment of the text. The collation notes combine very happily economy and clarity and the heavy faced type for Qq. Ff. etc. is a great help to the eye. The preliminary planning must have taken a lot of ingenuity as well as hard labour. A few of the entries have given me some trouble of mind but perhaps the difficulties are due to printer’s errors. Anyway I can ask you about them when I see you. I expect to be down between April 1st and 7th (inclusive) and then again for a few weeks after April 20th. Are any of these dates any use? I can come to town any day then convenient to you.
Yours sincerely,
Alice Walker.
