Scope and content

W[est] H[ackhurst]. - Rang up yesterday: Miss Simkins was out so his name may have been taken as 'Faulkner'. Hopes the report that all went well is true. Is wondering whether to go to a conference of writers against Fascism in Paris on June 3rd [the International Congress of Writers for the Defence of Culture]; on 12th June he is presenting a prize to 'a very unimportant English novel called "Harriet"' [by Elizabeth Jenkins] and 'rather an interesting French one called "Les Celibataires" [by Henri de Montherlant; the prizes were the Femina-Vie Heurese English Prize and the Heinemann Prize]
