      Dear Venetia

      Thanks for your letter {1}.

      Your† quite right to jeer. But I was so convinced you would do rightly if you knew the facts that I was anxious you should have them.

      I wonder what my mad […] {2} said. I am awfully distressed by my d—d speech. I feel it getting more impossible every moment—and I keep thinking other things—lunch today for instance and smiling!
