TRANSCRIPT:
The Reform Club
Nov. 13th 1911.
Dear Miss Stanley
I am so fearfully unhappy {1} that I am bound to scribble you a note even if illegible before going to bed.
I hate it for poor Arthur’s sake and loathe it for your family. Will you convey my sorrows to all concerned?
The Labour trouble is very serious—as far as I can see the Coalition is as strong as ever but it does not coalite.
I’m awful superstitious. Oldham and Nov 13th {2}—it looks like an omen for the Govt. However all of you are still more important and I extend you this handshake as a token of my sympathy
Yrs ever
Edwin S. Montagu
Thank you so much for all you were last week.

{1} Montagu was responding to the news of Arthur Stanley’s defeat in the Oldham by-election.
{2} Underlined twice. The succeeding dash has been supplied.
