Transcript

Shandygraft 7 December 27

Dear McKerrow,

The “Introduction” is quite marvellous—in its combination of absolute sureness in touching on every sort of puzzlesome problem—with the ease of one who did not in the least care whether he made any converts or not—

By the greatest of luck, I told my class in bibliography (24 boys) what I think of the book—with my marker at p. 262—Then I turned the leaf, to your very pleasant foot note, which I appreciate deeply— {1}

I read it, (to p. 262) on the train going to Ann Arbor last week—and amused myself applying your methods to your text—footnotes chiefly—The text, by the bye, seems amazingly free from misprints—

With heartiest congratulations
George P. Winship

Two of my boys, quite independently, got caught by your figure 9! However did it happen? Your rules don’t help a bit, to explain the source—

G.P.W. {2}

{1} The footnote on p. 264 contains a complimentary reference to Winship’s Gutenberg to Plantin (1926).

{2} The initials are indistinct.
