Herstmonceux - JCH did not have a chance to pass onto Christian C. J.Bunsen WW's message. JCH agrees with WW 'in having felt much pain at the wanton lugging in of Pantheism into Strafford's [Thomas Wentworth, 3rd Earl of Strafford] character, and have been entering the lists as champion on behalf of Lady Carlisle'. JCH proceeds to defend her against various slanders of infidelity and moral integrity. When WW has time he should read Strafford's trial in the State Trials - 'when one single forsaken man is bearing the violent clamorous assaults of the whole House of Commons, rushing against him with all the fury of the three kingdoms concentrated in their breasts, make it one of the grandest exhibitions of human nature that the world ever saw'.
