Scope and content

[On headed notepaper for 8 Grosvenor Crescent, S.W.]:- Thanks his mother for her letter. There has just been a 'monitor's whopping in the fourth for room. The whole school were assembled outside in the yard'. The boys punished were 'four Crookerites who had a mill [?] with their monitors and sixth form in their house, and licked them'; at least three of them were 'the greatest chaws [louts] in the school' and had 'a little to say for themselves'. Robert thinks the punishment was 'fair on the whole', though 'all the lower part of the school cheered them as they went out', and 'hissed and groaned' at the monitors. The 'better part, and influential boys, and sixth form got together and cheered the monitors'.

Has done most of his verse, and is starting his prose. The 'epigram has not been read yet'; thinks it is likely to be next Thursday, as all the rest were read out yesterday. Does not think he will need a tonic now, as he is 'quite strong and well'. His room is looking 'very nice with its decorations'. Charlie says he thinks the 18th will be a good day for their absit; there may be a half-holiday on that Saturday, which would mean they could 'get away' on Friday evening. Hopes his father is well. Will be 'very nice at Wallington in the summer'; hopes they will all be together. Ducker [the outdoor swimming pool] is open, but he has not yet been.
