[On headed notepaper for 8 Grosvenor Crescent, S.W.]:- Came fifth this fortnight, which was 'about as high' as he had expected 'for the 1st fortnight'. Must try to gain a place next fortnight. There are five other scholars, as well as several other boys 'who are as good, or better than them' in his form, so it is. 'very hard to come out high'. Has got a copy of the verse now, and is starting it; has had 'several exercises sent up'. Read his father's speech today, and 'thought it very good'.
Ducker [the swimming pool] is not yet open; even when it does open, he will not go down to it 'till it is quite warm'. Hopes Georgie is well and 'getting on all right'. Often gets a game [of cricket?l], though 'not every half-holiday; Charlie plays in his second eleven, and 'sometimes makes a good many runs'. Has, as his mother says '"cast a few longing, lingering glances behind' him, especially on Sundays, when there is 'not much swot'. Otherwise he has 'settled well down to work'. Is going to enter the reading prize, and the first trial is soon; Charlie is entering the sixth form one. Adds a postscript to say that he has got his flannel trousers, and that the Grove is open.
