Scope and content

The Shiffolds. - Very kind of his mother to send him 'so nice a birthday present': they opened it 'too soon', this morning rather than on the 28th. It will be 'very useful'; he will put it in his room, and 'be tempted to go through... old correspondence of years ago, so as to find an excuse for tearing up letters into it'.

Is glad she seems to have had a 'fairly comfortable journey North'. They are still awaiting rain here. Tomorrow they are going to London for a couple of nights. Bessie's toothache has not returned, and she seems well; she will probably visit Julian [at school] 'next today fortnight'. Julian seems 'quite happy' at school now. Robert sends love to his father.
