The Shiffolds, Holmbury St. Mary, Dorking. - The 'beautiful screen' his mother has made for him and Bessie has just come from London; it is very kind of her 'to spend so much time and labour... in making it, and it really looks very beautiful, both in colour and design'. The frame is also a 'beautiful piece of work'. It will be 'very useful, as well as ornamental in the drawing room' when they have fires again. It and the fifty pounds from his parents 'make indeed a most wonderful silver-wedding present'. Thanks them 'many times over' for their kindness.
Hopes she has had a good journey north and that it was not too hot; expects she will be resting for a while. Still very hot here, but they 'rather enjoy it'. Bessie is well, and Julian writes cheerfully from school. Also thanks his mother for her 'kind letter' which came on Saturday.
