Addressed to Milnes at Fryston; requests reply to be sent c/o Messrs John Gladstone & Co, Liverpool. - Likes Liverpool as well as he can expect, as he has made no friends 'except a young Carter who is from the neighbourhood of Bedale', who lives 'one the other side of the water'. Mrs JOnes received him kindly, and he has walked out to Lark Hill for the past three Sundays. Lodgings are dear. Details of his working life, in the office and at the docks, his meals and general habits. Has not yet had time to keep up his German, which he hopes to do by 'making acquaintances among the numerous Germans here'. Has subscribed to the Liverpool cricket club as advised to get to know other young men; has been twice but 'did not like them' and they only play on Fridays, which is inconvenient.
Hopes his 'Aunt Milnes' is well; supposes she is 'driving about the plantations and farms... to get a sight of the foxes which are fattening on your mutton'. Hopes his uncle has not forgotten 'Thorpes parcel'.
