Scope and content
Wallington, Cambo, Morpeth. - Thanks Elizabeth for introducing him to a kind of lamp and taking trouble over it; Heard has got a central draught lamp of the same kind for Wallington, and they both are very importance for 'the comfort and enjoyment' of his life. The news of the tornado in Gelderland [at the village of Borculo] made him think of Elizabeth. Likes to hear about 'dear Mary Caroline' and her experience of Elizabeth's teaching; she regards it as a 'rare opportunity'. Is interested in Elizabeth's accounts of the fatal lightning strikes near her. Has been 'very unwell lately' but is now recovering; had four of his teeth taken out yesterday, and will 'begin existence again on a lower, but happier and easier scale, as Europe ought to have done after the Great War'.
