34 archival boxes, one large box of outsize material, 15 albums of cuttings

These papers were presented to the Library by Sir James's son Christopher in May 2007, together with some printed material. The printed items are now Jeans 1–147 (see the Library Catalogue). The printed items contained a number of loose papers, which were removed and catalogued as Add. Ms. a. 463.

Most of the remaining papers were put into 34 archival boxes, the exceptions being a large box of outsize material and 15 albums of cuttings. A rough handwritten inventory of the papers was made March 2013. More detailed inventories of a few of the boxes have since been made.

Christopher Jeans

Jeans' papers include: school reports and juvenilia; diaries; personal and family correspondence; scrapbooks and albums; portrait photographs; and legal and financial material. There are notebooks containing scientific work; lectures; accounts and correspondence relating to publications; printed proofs; astronomical photographs; and scientific correspondence.

There is also material relating to Jeans' sister Gertrude, his first wife Charly (née Mitchell), daughter Olivia, and second wife Susi (née Hock).

NOTE. These papers have not yet been catalogued, but small quantities can be made available to readers provided at least two weeks' notice is given. It may be that certain items, owing to their contents or condition, cannot yet be produced. Please contact the Library for further details.
