Note
Pirie was one of Synge's oldest friends and scientific colleagues. He was Demonstrator in the Cambridge Biochemical Laboratory, 1932-1940 and Virus Physiologist, 1940-1946 and Head of Biochemistry Department, 1947-1973, Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Pirie's wife Antoinette ,whom he married in 1931, was herself a distinguished biochemist specialising in eye research.
