Contains copy of an essay by Thomson entitled 'Effect on Naval Warfare of Substititon of Steam for Sails', published in The Navy League Journal, December 1906 as the result of the award of their annual prize to Thomson, then aged 14.

His interest in ships continued throughout his life, and the autobiography contains many pleasant accounts of sailing holidays with friends or family.
