      Publication note

Printed separately, with only the satirical attribution, in 1682 (ESTC R7499). Printed in Works of Rochester, etc. (1756), ii. 52–60, under the heading ‘Dryden’s Satire to his Muse. Written by Lord Somers.’ See IELM, ii(2). 317, 321; ECS, p. 338; Henry Maddock, An Account of the Life and Writings of Lord Somers (1812), pp. 121–9; and Works of Shadwell, v. 263–72, 443–7. The grounds for the attribution to Shadwell are unclear.
