Item 677 - Scrapbooks belonging to Reginald Giles Malden

Two scrapbooks with over 500 candid photographs, accompanied by newspaper cuttings, programmes and menus for concerts and balls documenting Reginald Giles Malden's social life as a student at Trinity College, Cambridge from 1919 to 1921, his summer cycle tours around southwest England, his life in Cambridge and Ely while at Ely Theological College, and in the years after, including several photographs after his emigration to Queensland, Australia in 1925.

Malden's social life and activities while at Trinity included coxing the 1st Trinity boat in his first year, for which there are newspaper cuttings describing boat races and photographs, with dinner menus for bump suppers as well as memorabilia from the University Boat Race in March 1920, and programmes from the 1st and 3rd T.B.C. May Balls in 1921-1922. Cuttings, memorabilia and photographs portraying life at Trinity and Cambridge include cuttings of a mock funeral for a student "sent down", photographs of May Week events, including the Queens Rag Boat in 1920, the Cycle Polo Rag in Lent Term 1922, crowds on the occasion of Earl Haig's honorary degree in May 1920, and for the visit of the Prince of Wales, and for the visit of Prince Hirohito in 1921. Theatre programmes include productions at the New Theatre, Cambridge, smoking concerts at Trinity and Clare College, and yearly performances of "In Statu Pupillari", which carries the playscript. There are also programmes and printed lists of meetings for the Pentacle Club. The cycle camping tours made each year in August from 1920 to 1923 are well documented with photographs with images of sights and camps in Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and Cornwall; other summer photographs include two photographs from the Wimbledon tennis tournament in 1921, images from the Cambridge Fruiting Campaign in July 1921 and again in 1925, and a number of images of dogs and dog shows, with images of Talisman Kennels [at Edburton Rectory], the Ilford Dog Show, the Sandy Show, and the Windsor Show.

Later images are of Ely Cathedral, the Oratory of the Good Shepherd in Cambridge, and a group photograph of students at Ely Theological College in May 1923, with an updated list of classmates dated 1967. There are also images of 1st Gillingham Troop, a summer camp at Bearsted, Aug. 1924, a Mission House at Allington Rectory, and images of buildings at Aramac, Queensland and street views of Aramac and Barcaldine, Queensland.

Laid in loose to the front of the second album is a birthday card given by his son on his 80th birthday. Many of the people in the album are identified by initials only; the donor (his son) has identified a few of them as Janet May Dilkes Malden, Francis Nesfield Andrewes, Frank Russell Wood, and Margaret Grace Evans.

The remainder of R. G. Malden's photographic collection has been deposited with the Carlisle Archives Centre of the Cumbria County Archives.
