Synge visited Cuba to attend the First Annual Congress of the Institute of Animal Science, Havana, 10-13 May. Synge gave a lecture on 'Food proteins from plants and microorganisms' and gave a closing speech at the end of the meeting. He stayed on after the congress to learn about agricultural conditions in Cuba at the Institute of Animal Science. The Director of the Institute, T. R. Preston, was a former member of staff of the Rowett Research Institute.
