Scope and content

WW will vote for Lord Lyttelton if the opportunity occurs [see WW to JCH, 13 Oct. 1840]. WW gives his views on the nature of the election [High Stewardship] and the seemingly diminished role of the college in deciding the outcome. He does not know why JCH thinks it such an evil that the college should have less power in elections: 'You seemed to think it rather an advantage than otherwise that we should not be powerful enough to carry the election of Thorp...a case in which, in my opinion, the merits were all on our side: and in this respect, my judgement has been confirmed by our subsequent experience. The want of college patriotism in our young men on that occasion, showed how hollow were all hopes of strength in a mere Trinity College movement'. WW does not think that their minority will make 'such men as Lyndhurst ashamed of themselves'. Besides which he has mustered a list of very powerful supporters from the University.
