States that it was a great, though sad, pleasure for him to be able to see Henry 'the other day, and to see him so completely himself and so clear and unmoved in presence of the [alternation] which he has before him.' Concludes that 'there may not be perfect recovery' [from his operation], but there is 'good hope of years to come of life, and under not intolerant conditions.' Remarks on how precious Henry's life is to his friends, and claims that his work 'will not be done by anyone else as it has been done by him', but that it 'will be carried on - and that will be a comfort to him, now that it has been taken out of his hands.' Hopes that he may outlive many who are mourning for him now, 'and reach that three score and ten which does not seem so supremely desirable when one turns the corner'.
