Scope and content
Wallington, Cambo, Northumberland. - Elizabeth and Robert 'will have heard the news about Charles' [his engagement to Mary Bell]. He seems very happy and 'has probably done the best for himself'; she and Sir George 'think all will be well'. Mary has written a nice letter; Caroline hopes everyone will like her and feel 'she is an addition to the family. Thinks that when Mary was at Wallington she and Charles 'understood each others feelings'; he has been staying at Redcar for a week, and now goes to begin his [public] speaking; believes Mary will keep an engagement in Germany. Was glad they were alone when they heard of the engagement, as it is 'rather agitating'. Hopes the negotiations [for the house] are going well and not causing too much work; asks how Elizabeth herself is. Sends love to Robert; hopes the play progresses and that 'he will not be too critical of his new sister-in-law'. The photograph is very good; will send one as soon as she has copies; Elizabeth and Robert 'are excellent' in it.
