Scope and content
Wallington, Cambo, Northumberland. - Hopes that Elizabeth is improving and will get out [of the nursing home] today; feels very sorry for her 'shut up so long in that yellow room' but thinks she will be home and 'pleased to see [her] pretty things' around her again; always feels 'rather ashamed' of how much of a difference outward surroundings make, but it is a fact. Charles leaves tomorrow, then she and Sir George expect to be almost alone till Christmas. The storm has blown all the leaves off the trees. Their water supply has gone wrong, and they have not yet found out the cause. Will send some game around the middle of the week, as it will keep better at Wallington until Elizabeth returns. Asks if Boo [Mary Prestwich] got her some knitting; thinks that Elizabeth and Robert 'on principal [sic] should learn to play piquet or cribbage' which is 'such a help when ill', and some periods of 'being laid up' must be expected in life.
